{"id":782,"date":"2009-04-15T12:17:15","date_gmt":"2009-04-15T17:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/?p=782"},"modified":"2009-04-15T12:18:10","modified_gmt":"2009-04-15T17:18:10","slug":"gop-tries-to-co-opt-the-culture-jam-with-a-tea-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/gop-tries-to-co-opt-the-culture-jam-with-a-tea-party\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP tries to co-opt the culture jam with a tea party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/POLITICS\/04\/15\/tea.parties\/index.html\">Tax Day Tea Party<\/a>, it looks like Fox News and the Republicans have now embraced a form of activism: the theatrical culture jam.\u00a0 Now co-opting activist tools for corporate purposes <a href=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/2008\/12\/12\/invisible-theatre-in-code-orange-nyc\/\">is nothing new<\/a>, in fact stealth marketers have been doing it for years, but using an activist technique to bolster a right-wing message or in this case protest a tax hike for the wealthiest people in society is new.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-784 alignnone\" title=\"boston_tea_party_1_lg\" src=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/boston_tea_party_1_lg-300x195.gif\" alt=\"boston_tea_party_1_lg\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/boston_tea_party_1_lg-300x195.gif 300w, https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/boston_tea_party_1_lg.gif 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">early cultural appropriation: the Boston Tea party<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This event taking place in several cities around the US today, is scheduled to coincide with American tax day and is modeled on the famous Boston Tea Party of 1773 where a group of colonists threw tea into the waters of Boston Harbor in protest of the British Parliament&#8217;s desire to tax them.\u00a0 Not only was this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyewitnesstohistory.com\/teaparty.htm\">an early example of cultural appropriation<\/a> (the colonists who threw the tea overboard were dressed in Native garb) but the event that many consider sparked the American Revolution and eventually led to independence from Britain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now, the GOP is using this historic example of cultural appropriation as the basis for their appropriation of viral media and culture-jamming.
