{"id":171,"date":"2009-01-16T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2009-01-16T13:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/?p=171"},"modified":"2009-01-12T18:04:10","modified_gmt":"2009-01-12T23:04:10","slug":"thaw-from-viral-action-to-activist-benefactor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/thaw-from-viral-action-to-activist-benefactor\/","title":{"rendered":"THAW: From viral action to activist benefactor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/icon-thawlogo1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-175\" title=\"icon-thawlogo1\" src=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/icon-thawlogo1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"102\" \/><\/a>In 2003, a group of New York City-based theatre artists got together in an attempt to organize a theatre-based city-wide protest against the war in Iraq.\u00a0 The group stuck together and formed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thawaction.org\">Theaters Against War<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thawaction.org\">THAW<\/a>, a group whose goal is to nurture a pro-peace culture by standing up to attacks on civil liberties, the US&#8217;s ongoing &#8220;war on terror&#8221; and aggressive American foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>The same year, it stated to spread virally around the world, with new like-minded theatre groups, companies and artists joining up.<\/p>\n<p>Today, THAW is an international network of over 230 theatre artists from places as varied as Thailand, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Reno and Calgary.\u00a0 Members include Melbourne, Australia&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatreindecay.com\/\">Theatre in Decay<\/a>, Buffalo, New York&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subversivetheatre.org\">Subversive Theatre Collective<\/a> and of course the OTL in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>It also inspired another viral theatre phenomenon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kathrynblume.com\/LysProj.htm\">The Lysistrata Project<\/a>, which was originally discussed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kathrynblume.com\/\">Kathryn Blume<\/a> in one of THAW&#8217;s town hall meetings.\u00a0 In addition to their town halls, they organizes a monthly series of performances, readings and speak-outs called Freedom Follies and reaches out to the community by taking part in various events.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, THAW won the prestigious Obie grant presented by the Village Voice.\u00a0 They used what was left of their winnings to establish a scholarship fund in late 2006 for international theatre artists operating in areas of conflict or post-conflict.\u00a0 In 2007, they presented $1000 to the Beit Jala, Palestine-based theatre company Al-Harrah which promotes having a theatre arts curriculum in Palestinian schools.\u00a0 They also awarded $500 to RAPSIDA, an educational theatre group that spreads HIV\/AIDS awareness in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>With their Obie winnings almost spent, they are once again going viral to raise money for this year&#8217;s scholarship, asking member companies not only to nominate recipients but also to donate (even as little as $10) to the fund in hopes of keeping it alive.\u00a0 More information can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thawaction.org\">thawaction.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2003, a group of New York City-based theatre artists got together in an attempt to organize a theatre-based city-wide protest against the war in Iraq.\u00a0 The group stuck together and formed Theaters Against War, or THAW, a group whose goal is to nurture a pro-peace culture by standing up to attacks on civil liberties, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[7,36,3,6],"tags":[110,109,108,111],"class_list":["post-171","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-activism","category-community-issues","category-general","category-viral-theatre","tag-obie-grant","tag-thaw","tag-theaters-against-war","tag-theatre-scholarship"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=171"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":201,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171\/revisions\/201"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=171"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=171"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=171"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
