Catherine street were startled by a cacophony of voices. Rising above the din of consumerism, a chorus of profound human anger and frustration arose, voiced by hundreds of demonstrators furious with the overnight death of over 270 people in Gaza, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/world\/story\/2008\/12\/28\/gaza-sunday.html\">killed by Israeli bombs<\/a>. Traffic snarled as the street was transformed from consumer mecca into critical resistance &#8211; a mass of Palestinian flags waving amongst placards denouncing Israeli aggression and genocide.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image0011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-125\" title=\"image0011\" src=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image0011-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Montreal protest\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Montreal protest<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As shoppers stared, stupefied, the mob stopped to denounce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dominionpaper.ca\/weblogs\/stefan_christoff\/1399\">Chapters and Indigo<\/a>, two bookstores that have connections to what was described as the &#8220;apartheid regime&#8221; of Israel. Governmental policies are designed to keep Palestinians imprisoned in their own lands, such as Gaza.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_127\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image0032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-127\" title=\"image0032\" src=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image0032-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"protestors march along St-Catherine\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">protestors march along St-Catherine<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The angry voices were so loud that even the infamously noisy &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/story\/2004\/12\/15\/spoonman-041215.html\">spoon-man<\/a>&#8221; busker, usually in front of the tony Ogilvy&#8217;s department store, stopped clacking and put down his wooden spoons down as the march passed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-128\" title=\"image005\" src=\"https:\/\/optative.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image005-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"protest passes spoonman\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">protest passes spoonman<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The crowd eventually arrived at Philips Square, where speeches were made denouncing the violence, including one by newly-elected member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quebecsolidaire.net\/\">Quebec Solidaire<\/a>, Dr. Amir Khadir, himself of Iranian heritage.
