BND '08:
Mr. Monopoly goes looking for some money
 |
This Buy Nothing Day
in Montreal, Optative Theatrical Laboratories sent Mr. Monopoly, his
corporate money man and bag-carrying lackey to several banks asking
for a loan.
You see, he had lost quite a bit on the stock market. But that
shouldn’t prevent him from getting a handout. Unfortunately the people
at the banks he visited didn’t have their paperwork in order and his
loan hadn’t come through yet. |
Undeterred,
Mr. Monopoly took to the streets, asking passersby if they had $25 000 or
$50 000 to lend him so he could rest his feet and take the limo home and
get back to investing in stocks.
After walking for a
few whole blocks, Mr. Monopoly led his team into Montreal’s
underground city. The interconnected shopping centers were buzzing
with Black Friday deal hunters and this warmed Mr. Monopoly’s heart,
if not his feet.
He came to a realization: it didn’t matter if no one could lend him
money, as long as people kept shopping until they dropped, he’d get
his money back anyways. He would have his limo ride home yet! |

While some security
guards didn’t really get that he was the type of guy they were working
for and treated him like a commoner, most people were very happy to
see him and while they didn’t give him a cent and many of them were a
lot more appreciative than they would have been had he been someone
truly in need asking for a lot less money.

| The
same day we playfully jammed the monoculture, Black Friday (the
motivation for BND), was in full swing and sadly, claimed a victim.
Jdimytai Damour, a temporary worker, was opening the door at the Wal
Mart store in Valley Stream, Long Island when he was trampled and
killed by throngs of shoppers looking for a good deal. Our
hearts go out to Jdimytai's family and friends. |
